Erika Rintelen was born in Berlin in 1925; she died there in 2004. The city’s chequered history left its mark on her political sensibility and her artistic creativity. A particular influence was the partition of Berlin: for 28 years she lived so close to the sectoral boundary that the Wall was part of her everyday surroundings.
Erika Rintelen explored different media, from pencil drawing to gouache, acrylic, pastels and oil painting, and various forms of collage and montage. Her works were shown in numerous group and individual exhibitions, and she won four first prizes in art competitions.
